Day 02: Leh – Half day and full day sightseeing

This day is for taking in the sights of Leh and to use this as an opportunity to acclimatize further. We visit Hemis Monastery and Thiksey Monastery.Hemis stands on the western bank of the Indus River. The monastery also boasts of a very rich collection of ancient relics. The Hemis Monastery also serves as the venue of an annual festival known as the Hemis Festival.Thiksey houses one of the largest Buddhist statues, the 15-meter-tall Champa, the Buddha of Future. Thiksey is one of the most frequented and photogenic monasteries in Ladakh. About a hundred plus monks live here.Early in the evening,we then visit Leh Palace, Hall of Fame and head to Shanti Stupa which is a Buddhist white domed stupa on a hilltop in Changspa. We enjoy the panoramic view of the city at sunset. From here we can choose to leave the vehicles and walk down to Leh taking some quite back roads and into the Leh market to wander around at leisure. Day 03: Leh – Alchi – Themisgam/Nurla (3260m/10,696 ft.; 93 km; 3-4 hrs)

Post breakfast, we visit “Gurudwara Pathar Sahib” and the “Magnetic Hill”. We then proceed to see the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers at Nimo. We further drive to Alchi Monastery. Standing on the banks of river Indus, the monastery is also known by the name of Alchi Choskhor. The significance of the monastery also lies in the fact that it is the only one that has been built on a flat ground. The monastery complex has three major shrines: The Dukhang (Assembly hall), the Sumtseg and the Temple of Manjushri, all dating from between the early 12th and early 13th centuries. The artistic and spiritual details of both Buddhism and the Hindu kings of that time in Kashmir are reflected in the wall paintings in the monastery complex. These are some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Themisgam/Nurla.

Kargil is an outpost and apart from the prominence it gained in the recent war there is not much to recommend it. We rest in the remaining time as we are to make a very early start the next morning. After a photography session and acclimatization break on the pass we cross it and head towards Nubra valley. Nubra valley is sandwiched between the Karakoram Mountains to the north and the Ladakh range to the south, in between lie the Shyok and the Nubra Rivers. The villages of Nubra valley are scattered along these two valley floors. This is a beautiful region that once formed a part of the Silk route into Afghanistan. Because of the lower altitude a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and grains are grown, creating an impression of abundance. We go to Hundar village and check into a hotel. After a late lunch the group sets off to visit the white sand dunes and if lucky one can take a ride on the double humped Bactrian camels. Dinner and overnight stay at Deluxe Tented Campsite/hotel at Hunder in Nubra Valley.
7

Day 07: Hunder (Nubra Valley) – Turtuk (Nubra Valley) - Hunder

After an early breakfast we drive to Turtuk, and a lot of other small villages, were brought under Indian control after the 1971 war, when the Indian army pushed the Pakistani soldiers past the mountains towering the Nubra Valley. Turtuk lies at the extreme corner of the Indian border, and hence its accessibility is a challenge. Due to treacherous roads and sensitive army base camps, permits were not issued to Indian civilians until late 2010. Although the roads are marred by landslides and shooting stones, the 3 hour drive from Hunder to Turtuk is nothing less than exceptional. Throughout the journey, one has the company of Shyok, as well as the vistas, that define the barrenness which is characteristic to Ladakh. After visting we drive back to our camp or Hotel in Hunder for Overnight stay.
8

Day 08: Hunder - Pangong Tso (4350m/14,272 ft.;174 km; 6 hrs)

We are to spend the night in this magical setting and we check into our deluxe tented campsite and spend the evening watching the drama of light over water as the sun sets. Dinner and overnight stay at Deluxe Tented campsite in Pangong Tso.

Tso Moriri is a breeding ground for numerous species of birds. Chief among them is the Bar Headed Geese, found in great numbers, Crested Grebe, the Brahminy Duck (Ruddy Shelduck) and the Brown Headed Gull. The Tso Moriri Lake is 8 km wide and 28 km long.
